PhD scholarships in wine microbiology and biotechnology (up to 3)

Organisation: The University of Adelaide⁄The Australian Wine Research Institute
Description:

The Wine Microbiology and Microbial Biotechnology Laboratory together with collocated partners at the Waite campus (e.g. The Australian Wine Research Institute) is seeking up to 3 suitably qualified students to undertake research towards the degree of PhD. Three industry-level scholarships ($25,000 pa) and research costs have been made possible through grants awarded from the Grape and Wine Research and Development Corporation.

The research group has access to excellent facilities with capabilities ranging from basic microbial physiology (bench-top bioreactors, pilot fermentors, HPLC & GC metabolite analysis) right through to classical and molecular genetic analyses (PCR, microarrays, genomics, etc). Several collaborations with international groups will also enable phenotypic arrays and metabolomics to be undertaken. Current areas of research interest include:

Wine Microbial Biotechnology Scholarships (up to 3)

To support research into key areas of the genetics, physiology and optimisation of wine yeast and bacteria.
Projects:

  1. Directed evolution of wine yeast toward superior sugar utilisation (with AWRI).
  2. Molecular genetic improvement of wine yeast performance under stress.
  3. Cloning and characterisation of industrially important enzymes from lactic acid bacteria.

Value: Full scholarships: $25,000 per annum tax free plus project funding.
Tenure: Up to 3 years for a PhD and 2 years for a Masters.
Eligibility: Applicants should be Australian citizens or permanent residents (international applicants will be liable for tuition fees), hold a good honours degree or equivalent in a discipline relevant to the chosen field of study and be able to enrol in higher degree by research at the University of Adelaide.
